The caves were formed during the Miocene period, 15 to 20 million years ago. For many years they were under sea level and due to tectonic movements they surfaced. The Guatusos aborigines discovered the caves. Limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites and corals, form most of the caves. The underground river forms the whimsical stone formations. In the caves we will find marine fossils as also bats, spiders and crickets. You will walk through the river and waterfalls from the upper part of the cave.

LA FORTUNA CULTURE (AAT136)

Do you want to learn how to milk a caw? What a chapulín is? You’ll have the chance to learn about this at La Fortuna Professional Technique High School Farm. This institution has more than 40 years dedicated to teach the youth of La Fortuna and nearby locations the basics in agriculture and cattle breeding.

The farm has its own dairy farm, demonstrative areas for breeding of goats, rabbits, livestock, and pork production. You will also have the opportunity to learn about worm farming and visit the White-tailed deer breeding facilities.

Later on we will take our way to the property of our farmer friends; during our stay we do a little walk to see ornamental plants, variety of crops like yucca and piña, different kinds of fruit trees as passion fruit, oranges, grape fruit, bananas and others, at the end of the hike will have a sugar cane mill hands on special and later help preparing lunch by cooking your own hand made tortillas.

SUSTAINABLE TOUR AT DON JUAN’S FINCA (AAT167)

The visit to Don Juan’s Educational Farm is to live an educational agro – sustainable -farm experience where you can participate harvesting and growing cassava, picking some fresh vegetables, fruits for homemade refreshment, fresh spinach and other necessary ingredients that will be needed to prepare your lunch or dinner and that are organically grown through the concept of sustainability. WHITEWATER RAFTING (CLASS II / III) (DCW005)

It is a trip especially suitable for beginners and intermediates. Along the journey we can enjoy class II and III rapids, all with good technical level. A safety chat given by the tour leader will be the first step before getting into the clear and almost pollution free waters of the river. The fact of having only few people living nearby and the protected river banks make of this a natural scenario. Half way through of our trip, we will stop next to a peaceful pond where you can swim and give it a try to the tasty tropical fruits of the season, prepared and served by our guides. At the end of our rafting adventure, we will get dry and change our clothes before enjoying a great typical lunch. We will then start our return to Arenal getting back to our hotels in the afternoon.
